Star Trek: The Original Series 3rd Season Red Engineering Tunic

Out of stock

A red screen worn engineering division tunic from Star Trek: The Original Series (NBC, 1966-69), of the type worn by security as well as engineering personnel, including Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott (James Doohan).   Created for the third season of the series, this tunic was fabricated from a sturdy nylon double-knit diamond weave red fabric that would not shrink during cleaning – which had been a persistent problem with the velour material used for the first two seasons.  The collar is made of a loose-weave (sometimes called “spring weave”) black fabric, which has lost its elasticity over the years, with hook closures and a YKK manufactured “UNIQUE” zipper assembly running down the left side of the torso.  An original faux-gold Engineering patch with black embroidery is stitched to the left breast of the tunic.  Loose threads are present on the arms, where braiding for the rank of Lieutenant was once attached.  Some minor plucks are present on the front, with red card Paramount labels secured within.   Is it noted that the Engineering patch on this tunic is a second season patch, slightly smaller in size than those of season three, which suggests that the tunic was used during early third season filming.  Please see the attached screenshot and closeup photos of a patch from the early third season episode “Spock’s Brain” to see an identical version of patch design worn by James Doohan.  Overall, this tunic is in fine production used condition.
